Prospects for the Detection of Electromagnetic Counterparts to Gravitational Wave Events
نویسنده
چکیده
Various models for electromagnetic emissions correlated with the gravitational wave signals expected to be detectable by the current and planned gravitational wave detectors are studied. The position error on the location of a gravitational wave source is estimated, and is used to show that it could be possible to observe the electromagnetic counterparts to neutron star-neutron star or neutron star-black hole binary coalescences detected with the Advanced LIGO and the Virgo detectors. The triggering of electromagnetic observations by gravitational wave events
The prospects for the observation of electromagnetic emissions by gravitational wave sources first detected using a network of interferometers are discussed. Various emission mechanisms and detection techniques for compact binary inspirals are studied to show that the pointing ability of gravitational wave observatories and the efficacy of electromagnetic detectors can be combined to predict th...

Aims. The detection and measurement of gravitational-waves from coalescing neutron-star binary systems is an important science goal for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. In addition to emitting gravitational-waves at frequencies that span the most sensitive bands of the LIGO and Virgo detectors, these sources are also amongst the most likely to produce an electromagnetic counterpart to...
متن کاملMaximizing the Detection Probability of Kilonovae Associated with Gravitational Wave Observations
Estimates of the source sky location for gravitational wave signals are likely span areas ranging up to hundreds of square degrees or more, making it very challenging for most telescopes to search for counterpart signals in the electromagnetic spectrum. To boost the chance of successfully observing such counterparts, we have developed an algorithm which optimizes the number of observing fields ...
متن کاملGravitational wave detection using electromagnetic modes in a resonance cavity
We present a proposal for a gravitational wave detector, based on the excitation of an electromagnetic mode in a resonance cavity. The mode is excited due to the interaction between a large amplitude electromagnetic mode and a quasimonochromatic gravitational wave. The minimum metric perturbation needed for detection is estimated to the order 7 × 10 using current data on superconducting niobium...
متن کاملCapturing the electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star mergers through low latency gravitational wave triggers
We investigate the prospects for joint low-latency gravitational wave (GW) detection and prompt electromagnetic (EM) follow-up observations of coalescing binary neutron stars (BNSs). For BNS mergers associated with short duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), we for the first time evaluate the feasibility of rapid EM follow-ups to capture the prompt emission, early engine activity or reveal any pot...
